LSWR G2 – Super D
An extraordinairy engine 0-8-0 Class put to te test.
An magnificent engine originally build in the late 1800 has been modified over the years. However driving this engine in the way it is sold by Dovetail Games / Steamstore requires a engineers significent knowledge of the engine beside the basic knowledge you need to know in order to drive the engine in a basic way.
This engines is not just created for rookies and the HUD display does not provide the accurate information. Therefore it is recmommanded not to drive with the HUD [F4] however you can rely at the [F3] HUD because this small HUD mostly provides track information and minor information about the steam loco itself.
Now before you start presume the engine in a “warm” state. In this state you need to do some check ups as well. In the first place always check your water level and if there is any water in the boiler. This should be done alreadyn in a cold state when the fire is not lit yet.
Each water glass contains a set of three valves. Two vavles are connected by a rod operating both valves at once when operating the upper lever of the water glass valves. This set of valves connects the water glass with the boiler. Normally when steam is coming through these valves a steel ball will lock the steam flow to prevent accidents when the glass breaks. Tghe lower valve and lever let the ater out of the glass which will flow out of the guiding tube that leaks out the water underneath the engine.
Most of the gauges. levers valves and taps are working properly. Notable is the working of the injectors which can be adjust during the run with an extra valve. In this case it is not simply open up in the right sequence but also to listen to the sounds and noises of the injector in order to get the water injected properly in the boiler.
An other remakable issue is the way of shovelling. Any time you press the [R] button just one shovel of coal at a time and is thrown on the firegarate. In this way you count the amount of shovelling. The engine performs well on flat countrysides but in mountains driving this engine is a different story. It is always difficult to make a good climb on steep slopes, but before you start to climb any slope be shure you inject the water as much as possible but prevent priming.
A magnificent change is the way of operation the throttle and the reverser and is set in the original way of operating. To set the reverser forewards turn the reverser wheel anti clockwise after lifting the locker [E]. The same sequence is in use for the throttle as well. To operate the throttle prss [D] instead of [A]. The same way you operate the throttle within MSTS. It is even possible to lock the oil flow when the engine is stationary in order to prevent wasting expensive lubrication oil. Be aware to set the lever of the lubricators in the right position before you start to drive otherwise you will damage and crumble the pistons, bearers and rods of the engine.
Unfortunately you can not open the sandboxes, manually operate the lubricator, ash out the smokebox, topping up sand, remove cinders and embers out of the ashpan and neither rock the fire grate. The engine itself does not perform very well on rather long slopes and gradients but on flat country sides or horizontal tracks the engine performs very well and shows herself as a powerfull engine.
Driving this engine is a true joy. The sound of the exhaust and the outlet of the steam and smoke is tremendous and is balanced with the sound of the exhaust. This gives you a thrill of driving steam. Never the less remeber this engine is not suited for starters and you really need to know the basics of driving and either the knowledge of the manual before you start driving is magnificent engine.
