The knowledge to drive a steam locomotive must be evident and you need to know at least something about driving and the working of steam locomotives prior to you first operational efforst at the throttles, brakes and other equipment and instruments.

It a simple as that: You do not operate a TV without getting any knowledge of the manual in order to operate and control the TV you bought.
